Imperfections or inclusions are normally present in diamonds as are extenal imperfections called blemishes. To determine the clarity of a diamond, an expert examines the stone using power magnification from the underside towards a source of light. Certain inclusions cannot be seen by the average observer, in this case only the estimation by a laboratory can determine the S12 level, which certifies that the imperfections are not detectable by the unaided eye. A high degree of clarity does not necessarily mean the diamond is beautiful. Indeed, a high clarity grade does not improve the aspect of the diamond. Rather it will determine its rarity and value. The S12 level is recommended.FLAWLESS (FL)
FLAWLESS (FL)
Absence of inclusions or blemishes internally or externally with 10X magnification
INTERNALLY FLAWLESS (IF)
Absence of inclusions with 10x magnification; practically speaking smaller than roughly 5 um. The term Loupe Clean (LC) can also be found.
VVS1-VVS2
Tiny Inclusions that are difficult to detect with10x magnification thus the term VVS, very, very small.
VS1-VS2
Very small inclusions that are difficult to detect with10x magnification.
SI1-SI2
Small Inclusions that are easy to detect with 10X magnification and are difficult to detect by the naked eye from the crown angle). Grading institutes (GIA, HRD, EGL; etc...) do not recognize the S13 grade. The grade is used however by diamond
cutters and can be found in the Rapaport.
P1Imperfect. Eye-Visible Inclusions that are easy to detect with a 10X magnification and are difficult to detect by the unaided eye from the crown angle. They do not affect the brilliance. P1 = Piqué 1
P2Imperfect. Large and/or numerous inclusions that are easy to detect by the unaided eye from the crown angle and affect brilliance. P2 = Piqué 2
P3Imperfect. Large and/or numerous inclusions that are very easy to detect by the unaided from the crown angle.
